Agents accused of ripping off customers on travel insurance – 16 Apr 2007

Travel agents have been accused of ripping customers off over sales of travel insurance.

The research, by direct travel insurance firm InsureandGo, claimed travel agents insurance prices for a single trip are more than 15% higher than the market average.

Insurance policies for travel within the European Union are 9.3% more expensive through travel agents, while a worldwide insurance policy is 23.3% more expensive on average.

InsureandGo director Perry Wilson called for the Government to force travel agents to be regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

Wilson also accused agents of “indulging in heavy-handed and misleading practices” when selling travel insurance.

“The industry needs a level playing field and consumers need protection,” he concluded.
