Manchester airport expects busiest day in 81 years

Manchester airport expects today (Friday) to be the busiest in its 81-year history.

More than 115,000 passengers expected to arrive and depart from the Northern hub ahead of the August bank holiday weekend.

The airport expects to handle around 430,000 travellers across the period.

Meanwhile, almost 70,000 passengers are expected to pass through rival Liverpool John Lennon airport over the long weekend.

The high volume has prompted Manchester airport to urge passengers to plan their journeys.

They should leave plenty of time to arrive at the airport and check latest advice from Highways England on the road network and National Rail for updated details on trains.

The UK’s third largest airport also called on passengers to be prepared for passing through security.

“During the summer months on average around 12,000 bags a day get rejected and sent for additional searches,” a spokesman said.

“This is often because passengers have failed to comply and left liquids in their bags.

“On average it can add another five-ten minutes onto people’s journey time through security. Multiply this by 12,000 and the minutes and hours soon add up.”

Passengers can be prepared by:

  • Having all liquids, gels and pastes – no bigger than 100ml each – in a clear plastic bag
  • Coats and belts should be removed and large electrical items out of their hand luggage ready for the security tray
