UK operator bids to raise $15,000 for Bahamas hurricane relief

UK scuba diving specialist Blue O Two has pledged to raise $15,000 to aid relief efforts in the Bahamas.

The operator plans to purchase a watermaker, with all remaining money donated going to charitable organisations and local businesses affected by the devastating the category 5 hurricane earlier this month.

More than 50 people have been confirmed as being killed in the disaster, with 1,300 still listed as missing.

The company’s directors and investors have donated £5,000 to kick-start the appeal.

Donations from customers will be matched by up to a value of $200 per transaction.

Clients opting to re-book affected diving trips for a later date in the Bahamas will see also see the company donate $200.

A company spokesman said: “The Bahamas has already been decimated. The worst thing to happen now for the local economy is for tourism to falter too.

“Whether you come diving with us, or book with another tour operator, we really don’t mind. They will rebuild, and they need visitors to keep coming next year.

“Together, with our staff and customers, we hope to make a big difference for the people of the Bahamas.”

The latest initiative follows donations from cruise and hotel companies towards relief efforts across the 700-island nation,
