Connecting flights to the Galapagos Islands for cruises are continuing despite a clampdown on travel to troubled Ecuador.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but travel to the South American country.
The travel alert follows extensive protests against new economic measures announced by the Quito government on October 1 followed by the imposition of a state of emergency.
This has caused nationwide disruption, with demonstrations and road blockages in many provinces, according to the FCO.
However, the FCO added: “This advice does not apply to transit through Quito or Guayaquil airports for onward travel to Galapagos, which is currently not significantly affected.”
Amid curfews being imposed, the FCO warned: “Tensions remain high and the situation is volatile.
“You should avoid all demonstrations, as some have turned violent and resulted in injuries and several fatalities.
“The historic centre in Quito and the vicinity of the National Assembly are a particular focus for protests.
“Military personnel have been deployed nationwide, and security forces have used tear gas to disperse crowds. The president has moved the seat of government from the capital to Guayaquil.
“Travellers should consider carefully the practicalities and security implications of their travel plans.
“You should avoid inter-city travel by land where possible. Allow extra time to reach your destination and check travel plans regularly – you may need to change your plans.
“If your travel is affected by roadblocks, remain where you are until you have identified a safe route and means to travel. National supply chains are also being affected. You should ensure you have adequate essential supplies (food, water, fuel and medicine).”
Latin America Travel Association chairman Colin Stewart said: “We are sorry to hear about the current disruption in Ecuador. We are monitoring the situation closely and we understand that measures are currently being taken to restore the peace.
“The FCO is currently advising against all but essential travel to Ecuador, with the exception of the Galapagos Islands.
“It is important to note that this advice does not apply to transit through Quito or Guayaquil airports for onward travel to Galapagos.
“The Galapagos Islands remain unaffected by this disruption and travel to the Galapagos can continue as normal.
“We would advise all customers that have booked a holiday to Ecuador to seek advice from their travel agent/ tour operator and check the FCO guidelines.
“We hope for a quick and peaceful resolution.”
