Alicante airport fire grounds flights

A fire at Alicante airport has forced flights to be cancelled for a second day.

The blaze on the roof of the terminal led to an evacuation of passengers on Wednesday.

The Costa Blanca airport’s operator Aena warned that the airport would not re-open until at least 2pm local time today (Thursday).

With flights cancelled, travellers were urged not to go to Alicante-Elche airport.

Instead, they were advised to check with airlines on the status of arrivals and departures.

Ryanair, EasyJet and Vueling were among carriers with cancelled flights to and from the UK.

Most flights were diverted to Murcia and Valencia airports yesterday.

It is not yet known what caused the fire at Spain’s fifth busiest airport.
