Airports serving Brussels have been closed to departing flights today (Tuesday) due to a national strike.
Brussels airport and Charleroi airport to the south of the Belgian capital are both affected.
All flights scheduled to depart from both airports have been cancelled.
Data from flight analytics firm Cirium shows that 227 flights were scheduled to depart Brussels airport, with a further 230 arrivals.
This equates to a total of 40,477 departing seats and 40,986 arriving.
Charleroi airport was scheduled to see 94 departures today, with a further 94 arrivals, equating to a total of 18,102 departing seats and 18,102 arriving.
Brussels airport said: “Due to the national demonstration on Tuesday 1 October and the announced strike by a majority of the staff with the external security service provider, Brussels airport is expecting major disruptions to airport operations
“To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, the airlines, in consultation with Brussels airport, have decided not to operate any departing passenger flights on 1 October.
“Arriving passenger flights may operate, but cancellations are likely. We advise all passengers who are scheduled to arrive at Brussels airport on 1 October to check the status of their flight with their airline or on our website.”
Charleroi, used by budget carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air, said: “Due to the European demonstration planned in Brussels on Tuesday 1 October and the lack of staff to ensure security operations, all flights scheduled to depart from Charleroi airport have been cancelled.
“The safety of passengers and staff cannot be guaranteed. Passengers due to depart will be contacted by their airline for a new reservation or a refund. Please do not arrive at the airport. All incoming flights will be operated.
“Charleroi airport apologises to the passengers affected and will do its utmost to restart operations as normal and safely as possible on Wednesday 2 October.
