Gatwick issues cancellations warning due to heavy rainfall

Gatwick airport has warned travellers that some flights will be delayed or cancelled today (August 17) due to heavy rain in the south of England and parts of Europe.

This afternoon, south east England has been suffering from heavy downpours and thunderstorms causing flooding which has impacted flights and rail links.

France, Spain, Belgium and Germany are also experiencing heavy rainfall.

Air traffic control restrictions have been put in place as a result, prompting Gatwick to alert customers on social media that some flights will be delayed or cancelled.

The airport tweeted: “Air traffic control restrictions are currently in place across the south of England and parts of Europe due to poor weather conditions. This will unfortunately cause delays and cancellations to some flights today.”

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for thunderstorms which covers south east England and will remain in place until 10pm. A further yellow weather warning of thunderstorms has been issued for the whole south coast, and will remain until midnight.
