Tenerife has been rated the most appealing winter sun destination in analysis conducted by On the Beach.
The fellow Canary Islands destinations of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote take up the next three slots, followed by Sharm El Sheikh on Egypt’s Red Sea coast in fifth place.
The remainder of the top ten comprises Dubai, Cyprus, Morocco, Alicante and Madeira.
The list of destinations came as research for the OTA found that more than a quarter of people (27%) plan an overseas holiday this winter with 37% drawn by cheaper prices compared to summer.
The YouGov poll of 2,000 adults found that 12% want to escape ‘Christmas hype’.
Chief customer officer Zoe Harris said: “Winter in the UK can be miserable, so sun shiny beaches might feel light years away as you reluctantly put the big light on at midday.
“The good news is you don’t have to wait until next year or do a long-haul schlep for a proper sunny holiday.
“Our new winter sun index ranks the top destinations where you can swap huddling round the radiator for basking in the warm glow of the sun.”
