UK travel agent among 380 holidaymakers evacuated from Mauritius hotel blaze

A UK travel agent was among almost 400 holidaymakers evacuated as a blaze ripped through a luxury resort in Mauritius.

Fire broke out in the thatched roof of the reception at  the Lux Belle Mare hotel on Saturday morning, according to local reports.

Flames tore through much of the building, fanned by strong coastal winds.

Staff evacuated guests to the hotel beach as firefighters rushed to tackle the fire.

But 80% of the property on the east coast of the island was destroyed, with 380 tourists who were staying there were transferred to other hotels.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been started.

Plymouth travel agent Anthony Goord, of Peter Goord Travel, was staying at the resort and reported a “massive fire”.

He said on Facebook: “We’ve lost everything including passports, money and all our clothes but we’re here to tell the tale.

“We’re not due to fly home until Thursday, so I’m sure we can work out a way to get home.”

In an update after being transferred to the Lux Grand Baie hotel, he said he and his partner’s luggage, passports and money had been recovered.

Goord added: “Unfortunately most of out clothes ruined by ash/water damage but not the end of the world.”

He went on to thank industry colleagues for their messages of support and “kind offers or help and love”.

A statement posted on the Belle Mare website said: “There has been a major fire at Lux Belle Mare. Thankfully all guests and team members are safe.

“Sadly the resort will be closed until further notice. Right now, the well-being and safety of all is our priority.”
