Barrhead Travel reopens flagship Glasgow store

Barrhead Travel has reopened the doors of its flagship superstore in Glasgow after almost 20 months.

The Oswald Street store, which spans 22,000 square feet and is Europe’s largest retail travel agency, was shut ahead of the lockdown in March 2020.

Most of the staff at the store – which houses the agency’s specialist divisions including longhaul, cruise, Canada and its package experts – switched to working from home.

Barrhead Travel reopened its retail network in the summer but held off opening the Oswald Street store because the store was larger and needed more health and safety requirements, including being redesigned to ensure it was Covid-secure.

President Jacqueline Dobson said the reopening came at a time when Glasgow was getting busier and shop footfall rising.

She said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have reopened the doors to our flagship superstore and see our Glasgow city customers in person.

“Oswald Street is our home; most of our teams from across the country congregate here after training activities and, in normal times, we welcome suppliers and partners on a weekly basis.

“Our reopening comes as Glasgow city begins its own recovery. Footfall has been low in the city centre but, with Christmas approaching and more people back in the office, the city’s infamous buzz is at long last returning. We’re looking forward to supporting the wider business community to help revive footfall and restore the high street.”
