Nepal faces risk of further flooding as 33 Britons remain missing

The Foreign Office has warned of a risk of further flooding in Nepal in the wake of Wednesday’s devastating flash flood which has now claimed 475 lives.

The latest update from the Nepal Tourism Board said 667 people are reported missing and 31 foreign nationals have been rescued from the affected areas.

However, it confirmed that 33 Britons remain missing as a result of the giant flood in the Rasuwa district.

The tourism board added: “All necessary efforts are underway to rescue and evacuate injured, stranded and affected people.

“Rescue, evacuation and verification efforts are continuing in co-ordination with travel agencies, trekking companies, guides, local authorities and security agencies. 

“The authorities are also working to verify the status of travelers who may have been stranded, displaced or remain unaccounted for following the floods. 

“Information received from different agencies is being cross-checked and updated on a regular basis to ensure accuracy.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said in an updated travel advisory: “On 26 August 2026, major flooding in Rasuwa district and the Nepal-China border area caused widespread damage. 

“Buildings, roads, other transport and communications infrastructure have been severely damaged. Other areas in Nepal, including Chitwan, have also been affected.

“The Nepalese authorities and emergency services are responding. 

“The authorities have warned of the risk of further flooding. The situation may change rapidly. 

“If you are travelling in the region, follow the advice of the Nepalese government and local authorities and be alert to the changing situation. 

“The Nepalese government has established a toll-free emergency Nepalese language number, 1234, and a dedicated hotline 1144 accessible in Nepal.”
