A team from Oasis Travel in Northern Ireland is training to take part in Pedal The Periphery, a gruelling 48-hour cycling event which raises funds and awareness for the Northern Ireland Pancreatic Cancer charity (NIPANC).
It will be the third year in a row that the agency has taken part in the endurance challenge, which will see teams ride non-stop for 480 miles around Northern Ireland in a relay format on June 5-7.
This year’s team of 24 is the biggest yet as the agency aims to make its fundraising “bigger and more impactful than ever”.
The agency has raised more than £25,000 so far for NIPANC after taking part in the 2024 and 2025 events.
The Oasis Travel colleagues joined the challenge in memory of Gary Corkin, the agency’s former finance director, who died of the illness in 2020. He was the brother of founder and creative director Sandra Corkin and uncle to Scott McCabe, Sandra’s son and managing director at Oasis Travel.
They are also cycling in memory of colleagues’ other friends and family who have also died of the disease.
Furthermore, McCabe joined the board of the NIPANC charity earlier this year.
On Facebook, Sandra Corkin said she is feeling very nervous but is looking forward to the event, adding: “It is so important that we keep it going with this and that we keep Gary’s memory alive.
“Gary was such a huge part of my life and a huge part of this company. It’s really important that we keep Gary with us.”
McCabe said Pedal The Periphery is a “tough challenge, but one we’re incredibly proud to take on again as a team”.
“From first-time cyclists to more experienced riders, it is a real collective effort, not just from those on the bikes, but from the wider Oasis team and supporters who help us along the way,” he said.
