Hong Kong – Asia’s art hub

In association with: Hong Kong Tourism Board

Look beyond Hong Kong’s skyscrapers and you’ll find the city is bursting with artsy spots.

Hong Kong is quickly defining itself as the go-to arts hub in the Asia Pacific region. With unique street art decorating the city’s neighbourhoods, artsy museums with world-class exhibitions and a host of famous festivals, there is a lively, creative side to Hong Kong just waiting to be explored. This month sees the start of Arts in Hong Kong, a year-long celebration.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art is a good place to start, full of historic Chinese crafts as well as local artists’ work. Meanwhile, movie lovers can lose themselves in Hong Kong’s Film Archive, home to hundreds of thousands of clips and materials, as well as exhibitions and screenings.

You don’t have to walk far in Hong Kong to find some great examples of art in everyday life. Neon signs, which have gradually been replaced over the years, can still be seen in many parts of the city, including Temple Street Market. Huge murals and other street art are scattered across the Old Town Central area, along with quirky galleries.

And ArtLane is just a 20-minute walk from there, where buildings have been turned into blank canvases for local and international artists.

Tai Kwun, in the Central SoHo district, is a relatively new cultural heritage site, where visitors can enjoy music, arts and theatre performances, and the interactive exhibitions on show.

Creativity is woven into all aspects of the city, with many restaurants and bars putting art and design front and centre. Rooftop dining space Piqniq is home to the iconic polka-dot pumpkin sculpture, by world-renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Meanwhile, restaurant Mott 32 is set inside a former bank vault, with striking murals and unique artefacts inspired by Hong Kong’s fascinating past.
