1. Dive into Dominica

If saying yes between the bubbling waters of Dominica’s Champagne Reef appeals, Dive Worldwide suggests its Discover Dominica trip, which takes guests diving around these geothermal springs on a seven-night trip, with whale-watching, hiking and more thrown in.

“We’ve had a number of underwater proposals,” says Sarah Wight, product manager for Dive Worldwide. “The proposal is usually written on a slate and the rest of the dive group will be aware. It’s a unique experience!”

Book it: Discover Dominica costs from £1,795 per person, based on two sharing with breakfast, activities, transfers and flights.

2. Picture-perfect proposal

For clients wanting to go all out, look to Cora Cora Maldives, which offers an ‘underwater proposal’ package that includes a private snorkelling trip with an underwater photography session, a post-proposal turndown service and a candlelit four-course dinner.

The happy pair will get a framed picture marking the moment as well as 50 digital images, and there are various optional add-ons – from a private sunset cruise with champagne to a couple’s spa treatment.

Book it: An all-inclusive Beach Villa starts at $620 per night, based on stays between May and September (all-inclusive). The proposal package costs from $880.

3. Dine beneath the sea

If clients want to pop the question without donning a snorkel mask, there are a growing number of underwater restaurants offering the opportunity to do just that.

In the Maldives you’ll find the likes of Subsix at Niyama; 5.8 at Hurawalhi, the largest all-glass undersea restaurant in the world; and The Sea at Anantara Kihavah. The mother of them all, though, is the world’s first underwater restaurant, Ithaa at Conrad Maldives.

Book it: Conrad Maldives Beach Villas start at £405 per night and include breakfast.

Underwater suite

4. The underwater suite

Underwater restaurants are novel enough, but for an extra-private proposal in the comfort of their own room, look to the Underwater Suite at Atlantis the Palm, Dubai.

This bedroom features floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the Ambassador Lagoon – home to 65,000 marine creatures – with sharks, rays and colourful fish gliding past the bed.

Guests also get 24-hour butler service and in-room check-in, and if they want to continue the celebrations, underwater eatery Ossiano is a stone’s throw away.

Book it: Nightly rates for the Underwater Suite start from £3,347, including Imperial Club Access.

Sicily Snorkelling

5. Snorkel in Sicily

For a closer-to-home proposal that clients won’t forget, Kuoni suggests its Snorkelling & Underwater Biowatching excursion in Sicily. Guests go on a guided cruise with waterproof cards to teach them about the marine life.

“Why not write a waterproof note to pop the question in a unique way?” says Tracy Martin, Kuoni short-haul programme manager. “Being underwater among the silent marine life is magical, and you’ll certainly have some memorable photos!”

Book it: Five nights at the nearby Excelsior Palace Hotel costs from £1,299, including flights from Gatwick, departing June1, and the snorkelling excursion.
