Operators re-route amid unrest

TOUR operators to Bolivia have been forced to re-route holidaymakers following weeks of civil unrest and the resignation on Monday of president Carlos Mesa.

Bolivia has been crippled by roadblocks and demonstrations with protesters calling for the country's gas reserves to be nationalised. Police were using tear gas to break up violent protests.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is urging against all but essential travel to La Paz and the immediate area.

Roads in and out of the city and the Peruvian border have been blocked and flights to the airport cancelled.

GAP Adventures has cancelled all tours leaving La Paz in the next 15 days, and London-based World Expeditions has re-routed a number of clients to Lima. Bristol-based Trips Worldwide rearranged tours for three groups in the Lake Titicaca area who were due to cross from Puno to Copacabana, in Boliva.
