Average hotel room rates paid last year increased by 4% with the help of major international events such as the Rugby World Cup in the autumn.

However, London room rates fell by 1% to £135 a night over the previous year, according to the latest hotel price index from Hotels.com.

Despite the national increase, 32 of the 40 most popular UK destinations recorded more affordable averages of £100 or less a night in 2015. These included the Isle of Wight (£79), the Lake District (£91) and the Cotswolds (£100).

Blackpool offered the best value for money in the UK among the most popular destinations with an average price of £64, despite a 5% year-on-year increase in its hotel prices

Coventry (£68), Derby (£69) and Leicester (£71) were among the other most affordable destinations for a hotel stay.

Evidence of the impact of the falling price of petrol can be seen in the average paid for accommodation in the North Sea oil capital of Aberdeen in 2015, which fell by a quarter year-on-year.

Edinburgh also saw a slight decrease by 2%. However, Glasgow saw a modest average increase of 2%.

On a global scale, average prices paid per night for hotel accommodation were up just 1% last year compared to 2014.

Hotels.com EMEA marketing vice president, Isabelle Pinson, said: “Last year was a fantastic year for visitors to the UK thanks to its thriving culture and abundance of international sporting events.

“Although we have seen a slight increase in the average room rate, prices paid by consumers are still great value overall.”
