The idea of booking groups whether that’s a handful of cabins or an entire ship can seem daunting at first glance.

But the reality is quite the opposite: group travel is not only manageable, it’s a powerful catalyst for unlocking new revenue streams and driving long-term commercial success.

The numbers speak for themselves. At AmaWaterways, our group business has grown by 145% and we’re not alone. Across the industry, savvy travel agents are discovering that group bookings are flourishing, and they’re getting more creative than ever in how they tap into this opportunity.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that group bookings are only feasible for agencies with massive databases or multiple branches. Let’s put that myth to rest. In truth, a group can be as small as 10 guests.

Many travel suppliers including river cruise lines offer attractive group savings, complimentary places for group leaders, and a host of value-added extras.

Some agents simply select a departure date and market it to their database, funnelling business into a specific sailing to unlock these benefits. Others work with ready-made groups: multi-generational families celebrating a milestone, or friends who want to travel together.

Where we see the greatest success and the most exciting potential for growth – is with special interest or themed groups. This is where creativity and collaboration truly shine.

For example, some agents partner with local, non-competing businesses that share a similar customer profile, such as wine merchants or garden centres.

These partners often have a loyal following and a charismatic leader who can host a themed departure, adding their own expertise and drawing their clients to book. The result? The agent gains access to a new customer base, the partner business offers a unique travel experience to their followers, and everyone enjoys a memorable trip together.

Often, these groups form lasting bonds and become repeat travellers often booking future trips as a group.

I may be biased, but it’s a fact: river cruising is ideally suited to group travel. Our ships offer an intimate, social environment with plenty of opportunities for enrichment, all supported by a highly personalised delivery by the onboard team.

Private dining, cocktail receptions, and expert-led lectures are easily arranged, while bespoke shore excursions provide guests with immersive, tailored experiences. This level of customisation gives agents a significant competitive edge.

This uniqueness isn’t just good for guests it’s great for business. Themed and bespoke group travel allows agents to charge a premium, while savings, free places and value-adds boost profitability.

We’ve seen agencies of all sizes use our cruises to create holidays perfectly matched to their clients’ interests, often starting with a small group and quickly scaling up to part or full charters.

On a recent full-ship charter, for instance, we hosted Michelin-starred chefs for exclusive gala dinners, and next year we’re designing entirely new itineraries for an agent offering cruises unavailable anywhere else.

Some of our most successful partnerships began with a single small group and have grown into significant, ongoing business partnerships.

Group bookings shouldn’t be a source of anxiety they’re a pathway to profit, guest acquisition, and repeat business. There truly is safety in numbers.
