Aberdeen Airport security staff to strike for 14 days

Aberdeen Airport faces 14 days of peak summer strike action by security staff from next week in an escalating pay dispute. 

“Significant delays” are expected as the Unite union members make up the majority of the baggage screening team at the Scottish airport. 

Walkouts by workers employed by ICTS are scheduled throughout July and on August 1 after members unanimously supported industrial action. 

The first day of strike action at the airport is set to take place on July 6, then July 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30 followed by August 1. 

Unite said: “Negotiations with the company through the conciliation service Acas have provided no breakthrough leaving the security staff with no option but to take strike action.  

“The strike mandate followed the refusal by ICTS HBS Security to make an acceptable pay offer to the workers.”

Two separate pay disputes at the airport involving ICTS central search and Aberdeen Airport Limited workers have recently been resolved.  

Unite industrial officer Paula Buchan said: “Strike action will cause significant delays at Aberdeen Airport.

“ICTS still has time to return to talks with an offer workers can accept. A failure to do so will result in significant airport disruption.”  

The development comes after summer strikes at two of Scotland’s busiest airports - Glasgow and Edinburgh - were averted after new deals were agreed.
