ABTA board member Paul Chandler has voiced concern that non-ABTA operators could start imposing excessive surcharges on clients and give the whole industry a bad name.
He said prior to regulation 10 years ago a small number of operators acted unscrupulously when surcharging holidaymakers.
ABTA estimates there are 140 operators in the UK that are not members of the association.
“My main worry is non-ABTA operators. They might not be trusted and we would all be tarred with the same brush,” he said.
If the Government gives the go-ahead to change the law on surcharges, ABTA said it would continue to police members and make sure any extra charges were justified.
