Advantage Travel Partnership chief executive Julia Lo Bue-Said has led tributes to Colchester Travel founder John Bennett, following his death on September 29, aged 88.
In a post on Facebook, Lo Bue-Said said Bennett would be remembered for “his integrity, generosity and the positive impact he had on so many”.
She said: “I am sure I speak on behalf of all those across the Advantage community who will be deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Bennett, a highly respected figure in the UK travel industry whose loss will be profoundly felt.
“John’s remarkable journey included an extraordinary career in international banking, notably developing the Channel Tunnel financing deal in the 1980s and helping establish the Czech State Bank after 1989.
“He discovered his passion for travel during postings in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in the late 1960s and 1970s, which ultimately led him to establish Colchester Travel in 1995 and Nordic Experience in 2010.”
She added: “John will be remembered for his integrity, generosity and the positive impact he had on so many across our industry. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”
Other industry figures also paid tribute.
Claire Brighton, director of the Association of Touring & Adventure Suppliers and former senior account manager at Advantage, said: “A very sad loss - such a memorable part of my Advantage journey. Condolences to his family and travel family.”
Yvonne Holmes, director of Classic Travel Loughton, described Bennett as “a true gentleman”, adding: “Sincere condolences to his family and Colchester Travel.”
Lo Bue-Said said Bennett’s family welcomed all to attend his funeral service which will be held at Little Horkesley Church on Thursday, October 16 at 11:30am followed by a private service for family only.
