Consumers urged by CAA to do homework before booking last-minute holidays

Consumers are being urged by the aviation regulator to make sure “everything checks out” before booking last-minute holidays this summer.

Civil Aviation Authority says a trend to hunt for late deals is believed to be fuelled by worries over the cost of living, as well as poor UK weather in recent weeks.

Among a list of top tips recommended to would-be holidaymakers to to consider booking a package rather than organising flights and accommodation separately, to offer extra consumer protection under the Atol scheme.

Atol is marking its 50th anniversary with the first licences  issued to travel companies in the summer of 1973.

More than 1,600 travel businesses are now licensed under the scheme.

CAA head of Atol Michael Budge said: “Booking anything last minute inevitably means people making quick decisions but it is still important to do a bit of homework before you hand over your payment details.

“Holidays are always a significant financial outlay that can run into thousands of pounds, so it’s worth taking a few simple steps to safeguard your hard-earned money.

“By booking Atol-protected packages, holidaymakers can enjoy their holidays with peace of mind, knowing their money is safe and they will be protected should anything happen to their travel firm.”

Other CAA recommendations to consumers include  researching travel companies before booking and shopping around with other providers; use a credit card for holiday bookings and organise travel insurance.

Travellers should also look out for hidden costs and charges, such as booking amendment fees or payments for extra baggage.
