The advice has been issued by all of the UK’s major airports following yesterday’s terrorist attacks in the United States.

A Gatwick official said: “There are no delays and things are running smoothly although people should allow extra time for their journey because of increased security.”

Gatwick has been forced to cancel 28 incoming transatlantic flights and 24 outgoing transatlantic flights because US airspace remains closed.

London City Airport has been closed because of an order banning flights over central London. A spokeswoman for the airport said it hopes to resume flights tomorrow morning.

Luton airport is unaffected but low-cost airline easyJet, which is based at Luton, has cancelled a number of flights on its domestic and European routes. The carrier is offering passengers the chance to postpone flights at no extra charge.

Stansted airport has cancelled one transatlantic flight and is reporting minor delays.

Manchester airport has cancelled 15 transatlantic flights and is also warning of some delays.

Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are warning passengers to expect minor delays to European and domestic flights.
