Established: 1934. Now the biggest airline in the world following the purchase earlier this year ofbankrupt TWA. Operates regional UScarrier American Eagle.

Before September 11: American Airlines flew to around 300 cities with more than 900 aircraft, but capacity has been cut by 15.4%.

Passengers: 86.3 million carried in 2000, but September 11 and last week’s crash are set to greatly reduce final passenger numbers for 2001. During October American carried 5.2 million passengers, a 25% drop on the same month last year.
