BA workers to strike, union confirms

The T&G Union has confirmed its British Airways members will strike and has set an August 27 target for industrial action.

The union confirmed 66% of check-in, sales and admin staff and 84% of baggage handlers and drivers voted in favour of action.

However, BA hit back by saying the vote was taken on the basis of an old offer and branded the union's actions as "absurd”.

The strike will start on August 27 at 4.30am and will finish at the same time on Saturday.

The GMB Union is also likely to follow suit and also strike on August 27.

T&G chief negotiator Brendan Gold said: "Taking strike action is always a last resort but the consistent failure by BA to address the issues seriously has led our people feeling they have no alternative.”

BA director of customer services and operations Mike Street hit back. He said: "It would be absurd for the unions to go ahead with a strike on the basis of an old offer.

"Our staff must have the opportunity to make themselves heard on the new substantially improved offer. We again urge the unions to re-ballot their members on our new proposal.”

He said the union was doing members a "disservice” by not doing so.
