Belgian travel alert ahead of general strike

Eurostar services will be impacted today (Monday) ahead of a general strike affecting all travel in Belgium this week.

Industrial action on the country’s railways is expected between 10pm on Sunday until the last train on March 12.

A general strike on March 12 is then projected to cause “severe” travel disruption across public transport services, the Foreign Office warned in a fresh travel advisory for Belgium.

“International flights are likely to be heavily affected, with potential cancellations at short notice,” the advisory added.

Anyone planning to travel in the country is being advised to check with their travel operator for the latest updates along with Belgian railway company SNCB’s journey planner.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) added: “Strike action is an ongoing issue that can cause travel disruption. General strikes took place on 31 March, 29 April, 14 October, 26 November and 15 December 2025. Strike action may be announced at short notice. 

“Monitor local news and check with your provider regarding potential delays and closures.”

A Eurostar spokesperson said: “Following strike action announced on the Belgian rail network between 8 and 11 March, Eurostar services will be slightly affected on Monday 9 March. Affected passengers have been contacted and can change their tickets free of charge. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
