Cunard has cancelled the official opening of a photographic exhibition charting the 185 years since its first transatlantic crossing from Liverpool after a car struck football club supporters in the city.
Almost 50 people were reported injured, including four children, after the car ploughed into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade on Sunday.
Cunard had planned for the ‘Sea of Glamour’ exhibition curated by photographer Mary McCartney, daughter of the Beatles’ Paul McCartney, to open today (Tuesday) at the Royal Liver Building.
It had been timed to coincide with a visit to the ship Queen Anne by The Princess Royal to officially start 185th anniversary celebrations. The visit is going ahead but with an amended programme on board.
The ship returned to Liverpool on Monday almost a year after its naming ceremony in the city.
A Cunard spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by what has happened, and our thoughts are with all those affected.
“In light of these tragic events, we have taken the decision to cancel today’s official opening of our exhibition as a mark of respect. Our thoughts remain firmly with the city and its people at this time.”
