Top billings for nightclubs, restaurants and discount shopping

Dead ringers: traditional events like the rodeos are easy to get to and the DART bus/light railway system links many Dallas districts

 

 

As with the rest of Texas, biggest is best as far as Dallas is concerned. Take time out of your Pow Wow schedule to see it firsthand. From hip bars and restaurants to massive malls and chic boutiques, the city has something for everyone.

Location: Dallas is situated in North Central Texas, 35 miles east of Fort Worth, 245 miles northwest of Houston and 300 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. Dallas Metro includes the counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall.

 

Popular districts: Historic Downtown; the Arts District; West End and Deep Ellum for restaurants and bars; Fair Park for museums; McKinney Avenue for the antiques trade and other shops; Greenville Avenue and trendy North Dallas for shopping malls, boutiques and restaurants.

 

Time difference: Dallas is located in the Central Time Zone, 6hrs behind GMT.

 

Sample attractions: the rodeo at nearby Fort Worth, museums; Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park; Farmers' Market; Dallas Zoo; West End Marketplace; African American Museum; museums of natural history and art; Sixth Floor (JFK) Museum at Dealey Plaza; Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens; Dallas Black Dance Theatre; Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

 

Getting around: various private companies offer 24hr taxi service at very reasonable rates – Yellow Cab of Dallas is a popular one. The Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus/light rail system continues to link new districts. Single fares are $1 for local service and $2 for premium express sectors. Exact fare necessary.

 

Business hours: generally Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm. Stores are normally open Monday-Saturday, 10am-9pm; Sunday, 12 noon-6pm.

 

Visitor information centre: the city's convention and visitors bureau has opened a high-tech, walk-in facility in the former Dallas County Courthouse. The building, constructed in 1892, has been restored to its former grandeur. Inside there are eight touch-screen kiosks offering instant information on the city. With each attraction or listing, users can print out a map to get to their destination. There is also an Internet Café and an audio-visual room that runs videos showing the city and its attractions. The centre is located at Dealey Plaza, adjacent to the School Book Depository and the JFK assassination location.

 

Dallas: claims to be a shoppers' paradise
