Foreign Office updates Mexico travel advice ahead of England World Cup match

Foreign Office travel advice for Mexico has been updated ahead of England playing the World Cup co-host country’s football team in the capital.

The fixture at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium in the last-16 was confirmed after England captain Harry Kane scored two goals to enable the team to beat DR Congo in Atlanta.

Thousands of England supporters are expected to try to obtain tickets for the match at the 87,523-capacity stadium which will be played at 1am UK time on July 6 (6pm local time on July 5).

Three Mexico fans were crushed to death after a million people took to the streets following the team’s 2-0 win over Ecuador in the last-32 of the tournament.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office noted that the three people died following football celebrations in crowds at the Angel of Independence in the centre of Mexico City.

It also issued a caution over reports of increased mobile phone theft and drink-spiking  during the tournament.

The FCDO added: “If you plan to return to the USA for a subsequent match, and your passport is lost or stolen, an Emergency Travel Document provided by the British Embassy cannot be used to re-enter the USA from Mexico.”

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Mexico and suggests checking its travel advice before travelling elsewhere in the country, including the capital.

Should England progress against Mexico, the team would travel to Miami to play against either Brazil or Norway on July 11 at 10pm UK time.

If England reach the last four, they could face Argentina in a semi-final due to be staged in Atlanta on July 15 at 8pm UK time.

The World Cup Final takes place on July 19 at 8pm UK time at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.

There is also a match to decide third place, scheduled in Miami on July 18 at 10pm UK time.
