The Foreign Office has updated travel advice for parts of Mexico amid rising levels of violence in the wake of security forces killing a major drug cartel boss.
The updated information recommends against all but essential travel to many states and cities in the west of the country including Acapulco – away from main resorts on the Gulf of Mexico frequented by British holidaymakers such as Cancun.
However, the latest advisory warns that security incidents have also been reported in other parts of the country, including in tourist areas in Quintana Roo and Oaxaca states.
“As the situation develops, wherever you are in Mexico, stay alert and follow local security advice,” the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says.
The update came as thousands of extra troops were deployed by the government to western Mexico amid unrest across at least 20 states.
At least 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard have died in Jalisco state on the Pacific coast since the violence erupted on Sunday, the country’s security minister reportedly said.
Thirty members of the drug cartel boss El Mencho’s criminal organisation have been killed since his death.
The FCDO continues to highlight “serious security incidents” across the state of Jalisco, including in the World Cup host city of Guadalajara and the Pacific coast resort of Puerto Vallarta, following a federal law-enforcement operation against organised crime in the municipality of Tapalpa.
“If you are currently in Jalisco, minimise movements and follow any local shelter‑in‑place instructions,” it adds.
“These conditions are significantly affecting access to reliable transport and services, with local shelter‑in‑place instructions in some areas and suspension of certain local transport services reported in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
“Authorities in Puerto Vallarta have issued a public advisory to stay indoors.
“Routes to airports may be blocked. Flight schedules to and from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara have also been disrupted, with several airlines cancelling or diverting services at short notice.
“Check for messages from your airline or tour operator before travelling to the airport, and monitor local and international media for updates.
“There are reports of blockades on intercity roads across affected states.
“Be alert to potential disruptions and check local media, official guidance, and updates from transport providers before deciding whether to travel.
“If you do choose to travel, remain vigilant and be prepared for possible delays or changes to routes.
Advantage Travel Partneership chief executive Julia Lo Bue-Said said: “The recent update from the FCDO advising against all but essential travel to Jalisco State, Mexico, which includes some areas popular with travellers including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara is something we are monitoring very closely.
“Mexico remains an incredibly popular and vital destination for both leisure and business travel.
“We would advise all travellers in the area to stay informed, remain vigilant, and most importantly listen to the advice being given by the FCDO.
“Flights to and from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara have been disrupted, with several airlines cancelling or diverting services at short notice.”
