Foreign Office warning over Greek strikes

The FCO also issued an alert over demonstrations expected to coincide with today’s vote in the Athens parliament over the country’s financial bailout.

The measures, which include tax hikes and pension reforms, face opposition from many Greek MPs.

The FCO said that strikes can be called at short notice, causing disruption to air travel and ports.

“There may also be demonstrations around the vote expected in parliament on 15 July and any subsequent votes related to the terms of Greece’s bailout agreement with its international creditors,” the FCO said in an updated travel advisory.

“You should avoid all demonstrations and follow the advice given by local security authorities.

“Some public sector unions and pharmacists have called for a strike for 15 July, so some services, including hospitals and public transport, may be disrupted.”
