Iberostar under fire for serving whole shark carcass on barbecue

'" border=0 src="http://i.imgur.com/b1i27OA.jpg">A petition calling on hotel chain Iberostar to stop offering shark on its menus has attracted more than 900 signatures in just three days.

 

The campaign was launched by a French wildlife protection group after Iberostar Averroes in Tunisia was seen to be offering an entire shark carcass on a barbecue buffet. Guests were invited to slice a steak for themselves which would then be cooked.

 

Agents writing on the Travel Gossip Facebook site have backed the petition, calling Iberostar’s move “absolutely shocking”.

 

Sara Mason-Parker, creator of Travel Gossip, said: “Sharks are an endangered species and hotels should not be encouraged to create such a display.”

 

Other Facebook users called the shark display “disgusting” and “irresponsible tourism”.

 

The petition, translated from French, said: “It is unacceptable to be offered shark on the menu as a barbecue in a large hotel chain in Tunisia, where we also know that a lot of European people go on holiday.”
