The number of properties classified as a certified sustainable hotel contracted by Jet2holidays has reached 1,500.
The proportion has almost doubled from 800 when the hotel sustainability labelling scheme was introduced by the operator three years ago.
The increased number meet an official standard for sustainable accommodation practices on Abta’s list of hotel certification schemes.
The operator is now on track to meet a target of having 3,000 properties as certified sustainable hotels by 2035.
Examples of areas included in the certification process include reducing energy, water and waste, sourcing products locally, supporting local communities and using reusable, returnable and recycled products.
Jet2holidays has created a new sustainable hotel toolkit, outlining more about what the sustainable label is, as well as the process for getting certification, to drive future take up.
The toolkit has been created in partnership with the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which operates Green Key, an environmental responsibility criteria.
Paul Southall, head of sustainability at parent company Jet2, said: “Our certified sustainable hotels collection is a key component of our ambitious sustainability strategy, meaning that customers can easily find and choose accommodation that has achieved a sustainability certification.
“We plan to expand this collection to over 3,000 hotels by 2035, and the launch of our brand-new toolkit will help our valued hotel partners understand the benefits of this certification so that they can meet the demand from customers who are looking at wanting to make sustainable travel choices.”
