Loganair to close Southampton base less than a year after opening

Loganair is to shut its Southampton Airport operating base in October, nine months after opening the site.

The regional carrier will also axe its services connecting Southampton with Manchester, as well as its Manchester to Exeter route, with final flights operating on August 20.

Affected passengers are being contacted and offered refunds or alternative options.

The carrier first established its Southampton base in January with plans to station two aircraft at the airport to boost UK regional connectivity, alongside existing operations to Edinburgh.

However, Loganair confirmed the decision to withdraw from the base forms part of a broader operational overhaul aimed at improving network resilience and long-term financial performance, following previous flight reductions introduced earlier this summer.

An airline spokesperson said: “Following a review of our wider network and operational setup, we have taken the difficult decision to close our Southampton operating base at the end of October.

“This demand-led decision is part of a wider strategic update, which sees changes to operating bases and overall network delivery.

“These decisions reflect the same disciplined, decisive approach that has driven previous improvements in Loganair’s punctuality and resilience, protecting the long-term future of the airline, our people, and the lifeline connectivity we provide to communities across our network.”

A Southampton Airport spokesperson said: “We are disappointed by Loganair’s decision to withdraw its Southampton-Manchester service and close its operating base at Southampton later this year.

“Loganair remains an important airline partner and we thank the team for their contribution to connectivity from Southampton over recent years.”
