Malaysia retains high demand

Tour operators say they have not seen any drop in business to Malaysia in spite of the kidnapping of 21 tourists from the country by Filipino rebels last month.

 

The tourists, none of whom were British, were snatched from the diving resort of Sipadan off the coast of east Malaysia.

 

As Travel Weekly went to press, they have yet to be released.

 

However, Premier Holidays product manager David Carlaw said the operator's latest booking figures show that demand for holidays in Malaysia is continuing to increase.

 

"We had one phone call from someone who had booked a holiday to Sabah and when we explained that the kidnapping did not occur anywhere near there, the clients went ahead with their holiday,” said Carlaw.

 

"Hopefully people are educated enough to realise that this kidnapping has nothing to do with Malaysia.

 

"It just happened to be on a small island off the east coast.”
