Many over-50s indicate reluctance to cruise amid coronavirus concerns

Almost two-thirds of over-50s have voiced reluctance to take a cruise due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The figure emerged as part of a consumer poll for Saga which attracted more than 7,700 responses.

The Populus survey was conducted in March at the height of reports over outbreaks of the virus on cruise ships, including Diamond Princess being quarantined in Japan.

The research found that 6?2% of respondents were less likely to travel on a cruise, with 4?3% more likely to book a holiday within the UK.

Almost half of participants (4?4%) were delaying booking future travel due to Covid-19, with a quarter considering (2?7%) or already cancelling travel plans (25%).

The majority (5?5%) said they were awaiting future developments before they book to travel.

Just 1?6% of respondents planned to make the most of falling travel prices and book their next holiday while prices are low.

Saga Cruises has suspended all operations until June 1 due to Covid-19.
