Mount Etna eruption continues to ground Catania flights

Flights continue to be suspended at Sicily’s Catania Airport due to the latest Mount Etna eruption.

Services were initially stopped until the early hours of today (Friday) morning, 

But the suspension of departures and arrivals has been further extended until 2am on August 15 due to Mount Etna’s “eruptive activity”, according to the latest update from the Italian airport. 

The airport notice published at 11pm on Thursday said: “Passengers are kindly advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before heading to the airport. Further updates will follow in the coming hours.”

However, flights resumed at Malta International Airport after ash cloud from the volcanic eruption caused cancellations and delays earlier in the week.

The island’s arrivals and departures board showed mostly on time flights on Thursday.
