Multiples seek to counter crime

TRAVEL agents are facing an increase in crime because the public think they are awash with cash, delegates were told at the Campaign for Real Travel Agents conference in Maastricht.

 

 

Multiple Travel Agents’ Association chairman Brian Axon-Boyes said rising crime was a worry for multiples.

 

 

“I am concerned about rising crime and the threat to individuals,” he said in a speech to the conference.

 

 

“If you talk to the British Retail Consortium they are very concerned about crime. People think agents have a lot of cash.”

 

 

Axon-Boyes later qualified his remarks. “I think that as an industry, we have got to get the perception across that there isn’t value on site, otherwise there may be more of a problem,” he said.

 

 

CARTA vice-chairman Gordon Chapman-Hatchett said agents felt targeted because they were handling substantial quantities of money.

 

 

Lunn Poly managing director Nigel David said:”We do get the odd incident but they are pretty rare.

 

 

“We’ve done an awful lot to improve security with signage and closed-circuit TV. As an industry I don’t think we are particularly vulnerable.”
