New dual border control checks at Gibraltar airport are set to come into force on July 15.
The government of Gibraltar welcomed the announcement by the European Council that it has agreed the text of the UK-EU post-Brexit agreement and confirmation from the EU that it will be ready by July 15.
The arrangements will be similar to those with French authorities operating at St Pancras station in London.
When the new checks come into force, travellers flying into Gibraltar from the UK will face a check from Gibraltarian officials and another by the Spanish on behalf of the EU.
The Gibraltar Tourist Board said: “This should bring reassurance for travellers over Easter that no additional changes will be made until the summer for arrivals into Gibraltar.
“Now a date has been finalised, full guidance for travellers and the new entry/exit requirements will be briefed to the run-up to the July date.”
Details about the post-Brexit arrangements were announced in a draft UK-EU treaty in February.
The agreement also means routine passport checks will not be needed for the estimated 15,000 people who cross the Spain-Gibraltar land frontier each day.
The government of Gibraltar also noted in a statement: “The government has been assured that the new European Entry/Exit System, which comes into effect on 10th April, will NOT apply to any Gibraltar residents.”
