Over 21,500 Airbnb hosts agree to accommodate Ukrainian refugees

More than 21,500 new Airbnb hosts have agreed to offer their homes to refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The update came two weeks after the home sharing platform announced it would offer free temporary accommodation to 100,000 refugees.

The 21,500 new hosts include 14,000 across Europe and 4,000 in the US.

At the same time, more than $36.7 million has been raised to support the people of Ukraine following the invasion by Russia.

This includes

• Over $17 million donated by Airbnb and its founders
• More than $4.5 million donated by over 50,000 individual donors across 92 countries
• Over $625,000 donated by Airbnb employees
• Guest bookings in Ukraine have generated about $15 million in donations to hosts in Ukraine, with 434,000 nights booked.

A spokesperson said: “Between March 2-5, guests booking in Ukraine reached out to local hosts in all 62 languages supported by Airbnb.

“We saw the largest increase in use of these languages: US English, Russian, UK English, German, French, Swedish, Italian, Malay, Ukrainian, and Canadian English.”

Airbnb last week agreed partnerships with the International Organisation for Migration and the German government to help provide temporary housing to Ukrainian refugees.
