Ryanair to increase underseat bag allowance on European flights

Budget carrier Ryanair is increasing its underseat bag allowance by 20% after the European Union proposed new laws for more free baggage.

The budget airline currently allows a ‘personal bag’ that fits under the seat in front for free, typically a handbag or small backpack.

The maximum size is going up from 40x25x20cm to 40x30x20cm.

It means the volume will be 24 litres instead of 20 litres – although it is still smaller than easyJet (45x36x20cm). WizzAir is already 40x30x20cm.

Reports quoted a Ryanair spokesperson who said: “This change will be implemented over the coming weeks, as our airport bag sizers are adjusted.”

The European Union’s transport committee voted last month in favour of changes to passenger rights rules to allow travellers to bring an under-seat bag measuring up to 40x30x15cm and a small carry-on bag weighing up to 7kg at no extra cost.

The decision needs approval from 55% of EU member states before it can be implemented.
