Second London attacks damage trade

London's tourism industry fears ongoing terrorism-related events could cause damage.

The city was described as recovering well from the July 7 bomb blasts, but last week’s botched attacks and shooting could have disastrous effects.

VisitLondon chief executive James Bidwell said: "The feeling is last week’s attacks will have serious implications for London tourism.”

British Airways’ London Eye, right, reported a 50% drop in visitors following the second wave of incidents. It had a 20% drop in numbers after July 7. Theatres are also experiencing no-shows.

European Tour Operators Association executive director Tom Jenkins said the industry "is holding its breath. We don’t know what will happen.”

The Tourism Industry Emergency Response Group has commissioned a study into the attacks’ impact. It indicates a £300 million shortfall in tourist spend in Britain this year.
