‘Severe’ weather advisory issued for Malta as Force 10 gales forecast

A Foreign Office travel advisory for “severe” weather has been issued for Malta.

Gale force winds gusting up to Force 10 are forecast to hit the island nation today (Tuesday).

The British High Commission to Malta will be closed to the public.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: “Severe weather, including strong winds, are expected across Malta and Gozo on Monday 19 January and Tuesday 20 January. 

“Public transport will be disrupted; the Gozo ferry is suspended. 

“Malta International Airport is expected to remain open but this could change at short notice. 

“The government of Malta has advised people to stay indoors where possible, and avoid coastal areas.”

Travellers were advised to monitor local media for further updates.

The official Maltese islands weather forecast warned that peak gusts will blow until mid-morning local time  when they could reach Force 10.

“The sea will be very rough, with wave heights of up to 7.5 metres in peak gusts,” it said. “Plan for delays and cancellations in sea transport.”
