Grassroots northern agents were not prevalent at ABTA’s 50th anniversary ball, held at London’s Dorchester and costing a whopping £160 per ticket, with accommodation extra.

 

 

But at least chief executive Ian Reynolds was spot on with his stage appearance. He said virtually nothing in a speech lasting less than a minute – exactly right for the occasion. The last thing we wanted was a turgid talk on a night of celebration.

 

 

To be fair, it was a great evening for the lucky few who could afford a ticket. But listening to Capital Radio DJ Dr Fox introduce past presidents, talk about commission levels and rabbit on about the end of stabiliser was a bit surreal. Stick to the charts, Foxy.
