Airtours Holidays managing director Richard Carrick gave the best presentation by far at the Independent Agents’ conference and the amusingly named professor John Lennon also did a good job.

 

 

Carrick’s got an advantage over the rest of us because he used to be a lecturer and whether you agree with him or not, he certainly knows how to keep an audience enthralled. He went out onto the streets with a video camera to find out how independent retailers in the clothing business managed to compete and thrive against bigger rivals. That was excellent – it’s high time we all took a broader view and learned some lessons from other industries.

 

 

Meanwhile, we all expected the professor to be a bit dull. But he slapped down those people who have overhyped the importance of the Internet in a most amusing way. And I thought there was only one John Lennon.
