Passengers took to social media to describe scenes of “carnage” due to an IT glitch at Stansted early on Sunday morning.
Images posted on X showed long queues both inside and outside the terminal, with some travellers reporting missed flights after waiting for hours.
Suffolk county councillor Sam Murray took to the social media network to say: “Stansted is utter carnage. Surely they have processes in place for IT failures.”
Another said: “Thousands of passengers stuck in long lines at London Stansted this morning after a major system failure hit check-in, baggage & security. Some gave up and went home. The airport says the issue is resolved, but delays continue.”
Jet2 and Tui were among airlines delaying departures while Ryanair early flights on Sunday were reported to have left on time but nearly empty to avoid later delays.
Stansted reported an “ongoing IT issue” on X at 6am yesterday with a number of airport systems affected, including check-in baggage and security.
The airport said the issue had been resolved but some arrivals and departures could face delays.
A second post on X at 8am said: “Our teams are working hard to fully restore operations following the IT issue that impacted our systems earlier this morning.”
A third post at 10.30am said: “While the issue has now been fully resolved, some departing flights may still experience delays.”
A Stansted spokesperson said that delays were likely to continue throughout the day on Sunday as a result of the earlier issue and as the operation recovers.
“The cause of the outage is still under investigation,” they added.
“No flights have been cancelled. Some airlines have run to schedule without delay while others have delayed services to allow as many passengers as possible to board their aircraft.”
