Travel industry pays tribute to ‘true gentleman’ Graham Oswald

Travel industry figures have paid tribute to Graham Oswald, formerly of Thomas Cook, after his death this week aged 77.

Oswald, who died on Tuesday (August 11), was commercial relations manager at the tour operator during a long career before retirement.

Barrhead Travel president Jacqueline Dobson said: “We worked with Graham Oswald for many years, and he supported us throughout his time at Thomas Cook. Graham was the nicest man, such a gentleman.”

The Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association (SPAA) described Oswald as a “committed supporter” of the SPAA, noting he served “for many years” on the annual dinner committee and was an honorary member of the association.

SPAA secretary Janice Hogarth added Oswald was “always smiling and a true gentleman”.

“Everyone in Scotland loved Graham and never had a bad word to say about him,” she said.

Oswald, who was voted leisure representative of the year at the SPAA awards on a number of occasions, worked with tour operators including Ellerman Sunflight, Intasun, Sunworld and JMC.

He managed accounts including Hays Travel, Barrhead Travel and Dawson & Sanderson.

Hays Travel chair Dame Irene Hays said: “Graham Oswald was one of the finest, kindest, most considerate people in the travel industry. We have all lost someone very special. I send my condolences to his family. It was a privilege to know him.”

TProfile chief sales officer Bhav Taylor said she first met Oswald when she joined Thomas Cook’s Signature brand.

“He was incredibly generous in introducing me to a number of people, particularly across Scotland, and I have very fond memories of those early days,” Taylor said.

“We remained in touch after Graham left the industry and I also stayed close to his wife, Morag.

“That, for me, is what makes this industry so special: work colleagues become lifelong friends, and those friendships endure long after you leave the industry.

“We have lost a truly special individual this week, and Graham will be greatly missed.”
