Turkey pushes non-EES status to attract last-minute holidaymakers

Turkey is seeking to press home a competitive advantage over rival destinations this summer by not asking holidaymakers to endure lengthy EU Entry-Exit System (EES) checks.

The country sits outside the Schengen zone and is not covered by EES, meaning British travellers flying direct can avoid additional biometric checks at the border.

Turkey’s tourism authority highlighted its position after aviation and trade bodies warned of long delays due to EES.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) noted last month that the system could discourage around a third of travellers from visiting Schengen Area countries.

A statement said: “Turkey sits outside the Schengen zone and is not covered by Entry-Exit System – meaning British travellers flying direct won’t have to face additional biometric checks, experiencing a smoother route to the sun this summer.

“Extensive direct air connectivity and efficient border procedures mean visitors can spend less time waiting and begin enjoying their holiday from the moment they arrive.

“One of Turkey’s greatest advantages is its extensive airport network, which spans all seven regions of the country.

“Combining modern infrastructure, high service standards and Turkish hospitality, the country’s airports provide visitors with a warm and efficient welcome."
