Viking has introduced the last traditionally-powered ocean cruise ship before adopting next generation propulsion technologies on its next two vessels.
Viking Mira has the ability to be retrofitted to incorporate the new tech as it becomes available.
The 998-passenger ocean-going ship – the 13th in the fleet - was delivered to the company from Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy, and will spend its inaugural season in the Mediterranean and northern Europe.
The line’s next ocean ship, Viking Libra, is due to be delivered in November as the world’s first to be powered by hydrogen, making it capable of operating with zero emissions. The vessel will feature a propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells.
Viking’s subsequent ocean ship, Viking Astrea, scheduled for delivery in 2027, will also be hydrogen-powered.
President and chief executive Leah Talactac said: “We are delighted to welcome the Viking Mira to our elegant fleet of small sister ships.
“Our guests are curious travellers, and the arrival of a new ship allows us to offer them even more opportunities to explore the world in Viking comfort.”
Based on Viking’s committed orderbook, the company expects to take delivery of 24 additional river ships by 2028, nine more ocean ships by 2031 and two extra expedition ships by 2031.
With these orders, Viking will have 114 river ships in 2028 and 26 ocean and expedition ships in 2031.
