Worldchoice event hit by airport strike

A 24-HOUR strike by Cyprus airport staff affected Worldchoice agents travelling out for their annual conference as well as British holidaymakers.

An estimated 5,000 UK passengers were delayed by the industrial action at Larnaca and Paphos airports, which kicked off at 7.30am last Wednesday.

A total of 500 people were expected to attend Worldchoice's annual conference last weekend but only the early arrivals to the event were affected by the strike.

Cyprus Tourism Organisation UK director Orestis Rossides said that the strike by public sector workers was due to a dispute about the health service and had absolutely nothing to do with the travel industry.

He apologised to all those who had been inconvenienced and said the airlines were doing their best to catch up with the backlog of flights.

The CTO in London was itself short staffed during the industrial action due to a 24-hour strike by London Underground staff over safety concerns.
