The starting point: Chihuahua
The first stop on any northern Mexico itinerary should be Chihuahua. While the Grand Canyon may be the better-known name, the vast copper-green landscapes of Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre) are even more impressive. This network of six canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental is larger and deeper than its US counterpart, stretching across dramatic mountain terrain carved by rivers over millions of years.
Encourage clients to board the Chepe Express, which links Creel, Chihuahua’s Magical Town, with Mexico’s Pacific coast. Over nine unforgettable hours, the train winds through towering forests, plunges through dozens of tunnels and reveals sweeping views of sheer cliffs, rugged gorges and vast valleys.
Adventure seekers will find plenty to get their pulse racing at Parque de Aventura Barrancas del Cobre (Copper Canyon Adventure Park). Visitors can soar above the canyons of Del Cobre, Tararecua and Urique on one of the world’s longest zip lines, reaching speeds of up to 60mph. Below, deep ravines cut through the landscape, while the ancestral homeland of the Rarámuri (Tarahumara) people unfolds across the mountains.
Before the adventure begins in Chihuahua City, clients can trace the stories of the Mexican Revolution while wandering streets lined with colonial buildings. Recommend a stroll through the grand Plaza de Armas to admire the Cathedral of Chihuahua, a striking example of Spanish baroque architecture with its ornate façade and dome.
Food is shaped by the semi-arid climate of northern Mexico and includes dried beef machaca, flour tortillas rather than corn tortillas and Mennonite cheese, a mild semi-soft cheese introduced by Mennonite settlers in the 1920s.
Beyond Chihuahua: La Paz and Los Cabos
For clients seeking a combination of culture, wildlife and beachside relaxation, suggest flying into Chihuahua before continuing to La Paz or Los Cabos on the Baja California Peninsula. The two destinations are separated by a scenic two-hour drive and offer a refreshing alternative to Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
La Paz has long attracted nature lovers, divers and marine biologists thanks to the Sea of Cortez, famously described by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau as the ‘Aquarium of the World’. Its clear blue waters teem with marine life, including whale sharks, dolphins, sea turtles and hundreds of species of fish.
In nearby Los Cabos, visitors can expect lively nightlife, luxury resorts and championship golf courses set against both desert and ocean scenery. Cabo San Lucas is famous for its vibrant nightlife, including the legendary Cabo Wabo Cantina founded by rock musician Sammy Hagar. Between December and April, humpback and grey whales migrate along the Pacific coast – recommend a boat ride to the iconic El Arco for a chance to spot the majestic creatures.
